We had another good turn out for the September meeting of the Cambridge LabVIEW User Group. 28 people turned out to hear a variety of presentations on the subject of Large Application Development, hosted by Richard Thomas of Product Technology Ltd. First up was Chris Mayer from Observatory Sciences Ltd who described a large, distributed, multiple-component control system for space observation telescopes. This was a complex mixture of LabVIEW applications which interfaced to clients with other systems and involved the creation of a remote update facility.
We then heard from Christie Nel from Owlstone Ltd who presented a VI Register which is a tool for managing independently running VIs in a controlled manner. He also discussed the dynamic queued state machine architecture for advanced system flow. The first part of the session then ended with an on-line presentation from National Instruments about Large Application Development which included the Desktop Exe Trace Toolkit and unit test framework. After the break Phill Tadman from Mass Consultants Ltd talked to us about developing a 3000+ VI LabVIEW Object Oriented application incorporating Design Patterns. This included lots of useful tips and concluded with the message that the use of LVOOP had been very interesting and worthwhile. Peter Fitzgerald (NI Alliance Member) gave the last presentation of the afternoon during which he shared his 14 years of LabVIEW wisdom regarding large application development. He outlined how the keys to a successful project lie in early customer relations, good specifications and proper requirement gathering.
